Road bike tour on the Timmelsjoch / Timmel / Passo del Rombo
Alpine pass between Tyrol and South Tyrol
44 hairpin bends, 30 km and 1,700 hm from St. Leonhard to the Timmelsjoch
The Timmelsjoch is considered one of the most challenging passes in the Alpine region – making this road bike tour even more attractive.
At 2,509 (or 2,474 m) meters, the Timmelsjoch connects the winter sports resort of Sölden in Austria with St. Leonhard in Passeier Valley in Italy.
The route from the South Tyrolean side is the more demanding one. It's not without reason that it's part of the Ötztaler Cycle Marathon.
We mount our bikes in St. Leonhard in Passeier Valley and warm up during the first 8 km to the village of Moos. After leaving the village and conquering the first serpentines, we've already gained considerable altitude.
The barren high mountain landscape reveals its full beauty: snow fields on both sides of the road accompany us on the last kilometers. We pass through the final two unlit tunnels and after the last kilometer, we arrive at the Timmelsjoch.
Here at the latest, the view opens up to the landscape and history of the Timmelsjoch. At the tour's destination, the Pass Museum protrudes into view from the Tyrolean side. During the descent back to St. Leonhard, we encounter four more such information points. Display boards inform about the special features of the Timmelsjoch: the smuggling tradition, its geology, or the hay shooting.
Several viewing platforms invite you to admire the beautiful mountain panorama.
